To achieve the most efficient power conversion circuit requires the best semiconductor switch as the fundamental building block. Many people now consider gallium nitride to be a better switch than silicon. This is because GaN transistors feature a very low on-resistance and very high switching speeds; they are also rugged as they do not suffer avalanche breakdown of traditional MOSFETs.
